MISSION - WHAT WE DO

We are dedicated to a single purpose: empowering veterans to lead high-quality lives with respect and dignity. We accomplish this by ensuring that veterans and their families can access the full range of benefits available to them, fighting for the interests of America's injured heroes on Capitol Hill, and educating the public about the great sacrifices and needs of veterans transitioning back to civilian life.

VISION - GOALS AND ASPIRATIONS

​DAV was founded in 1920 and chartered by Congress for the single purpose of building better lives for injured and ill veterans and their families. Veterans making the transition back to civilian life must overcome many obstacles, and we provide programs that address their overall health and well-being. Beyond helping hundreds of veterans from all eras each year access available government benefits, we fund rehabilitation and counseling programs, link veterans to job training programs and work to address homelessness. All DAV services are free. With the backing of our nearly 100,000 Californian members, we represent the voices of ill and injured veterans before Congress.

SERVICES - HOW WE DO IT

​Our highly-trained department service officers (DSOs) provide free, professional assistance to veterans of all generations in obtaining VA and other government benefits earned through service. These DSOs provide counseling on all veterans’ benefits including disability compensation, health care, pension, survivors’ benefits, employment rights, education and more. Our DSOs also help veterans assemble evidence needed to support claims, build their cases, and prepare forms and briefs.
