SERVICES - HOW WE DO IT
Our roots are in Rendokan Shorin Ryu Karate as formulated by Grand Master Shimabukuro Eizo, and Shotokan Karate as taught by Master Tsutomu Ohshima. Okinawa Shorin Ryu: Master Shimabuku taught the traditional Okinawa Shorin Ryu Kata, along with bunkai, and various forms of kumite. We practiced juji kumite in full body armor. He also taught weapons such as Bo, Sai, and Tunfa. A Buddhist, his philosophy was simple. He reminded the student of the essential things in life: tolerance, self-respect, and a kindness that cannot be persuaded by either threat of death or abundant living. Shotokan Karate: The Shotokan Karate element of Sandokai is organized the disciplined directness that Ohshima Sensei teaches, primarily in ippon kumite, or one-time engagement. We practice oizuki as if our lives and the good within humanity might depend upon a single action that is rooted in both compassion and integrity. We try to practice oizuki as if it were a straight and narrow path to our essential identities as human beings. Raja Yoga: The spirit of those two methods of practice—Shorin Ryu and Shotokan—was infused with a third: The Tibetan Buddhist teaching of Guru Dorjie, aimed at the discovery of our personal vulnerabilities to self-deception and the illusion of separateness. The third element of our practice goes nearly unnoticed by the beginner; it can only be realized through the art of conscious living. At this level, the practitioner finds the freedom to self-experiment through basic martial arts movements, while developing his or her personal spirituality and sense of being. The breakthrough is unique to each student; it happens in an “oh!” moment. No outside force can decide when, or how a breakthrough happens; it is on the far side of rank, external rewards, or recognition; it is a shift in consciousness where the student gets a glimpse of the teachings, and intuitively knows the way. These citizen warriors, family members, friends, and fellow travelers—regardless their culture, ethnicity, their gender or their social or economic status—keep the spirit of dojo alive.
