MISSION - WHAT WE DO

We are a non-profit corporation founded in 1981 by the Puerto Rico Bar Association with the purpose of offering free legal services to indigent people in the civil and administrative areas of law. It arose as a response to the concern of a group of altruistic lawyers committed to the cause of the poor, who were interested in creating an instrument that would allow them to formally realize their desire to put their knowledge and skills to use in serving the less fortunate. Thanks to the excellent work of thousands of colleagues who have served as volunteers on the panel over the years, Pro-Bono has received recognition from various organizations both in Puerto Rico and in the United States. In 1984, the National Legal Aid and Defender Association , a recognized organization in the United States, awarded it the “Harrison Tweed Award” as one of the three best legal aid programs for the indigent. The American Bar Association has praised Pro-Bono’s excellence in both the quantity and quality of the cases handled. The funds to finance the Program's operations come mostly from annual contributions from Legal Services of Puerto Rico , funds allocated by the Legislature and the Government of Puerto Rico, the Department of Justice and the College of Lawyers of Puerto Rico . Pro-Bono is an exclusive, but simple, group of legal professionals who take seriously the legal vocation, which is one of love and service; a group of men and women committed to justice and a better Puerto Rico for all.

SERVICES - HOW WE DO IT

In compliance with Canon I of the Code of Professional Ethics that governs the legal profession in Puerto Rico, Pro-Bono offers legal representation services to people with limited economic resources, both in courts and in administrative agencies, as well as advice and brief services. When offering these services, high priority is given to the groups of people with the greatest need, such as the elderly, women and abused children.
